Radiobiology Cell Survival
نویسنده
چکیده
The loss of proliferative potential of a cell is often equated to cell kill, and many studies of the cellular effects of radiation (both ionising and non-ionising) utilise this definition of cell kill to define cell survival. To measure cell survival using this paradigm, a cell culture that has been exposed to a known dose of radiation is cultured and, at a predefined time post irradiation, the number of reproducing cells counted. For ionising radiation, it is generally assumed that any small dose is detrimental to cell survival, which manifests as a broad sigmoid function describing survival as a function of dose, illustrated in Figure 7.1. The resulting survival curve determines the radiosensitivity of the cell, which can be determined from the slope of this curve or the curve shown in Figure 5.16.

Review of Geant4 Applications in Radiobiology
Introduction: Ionizing radiation is widely used in industry and medicine; however, it causes a significant health hazard by making microscopic damage to living tissue. Various biological parameters, including cell survival fraction and relative biological effectiveness, are taken into account to assess the severity and extent of biological damages. Microdosimetry suffe...
متن کاملPI3K and mTOR inhibitor, NVP-BEZ235, is more toxic than X-rays in prostate cancer cells
Background: Radiotherapy and adjuvant androgen deprivation therapy have historically been the first treatment choices for prostate cancer but treatment resistance often limits the capacity to effectively manage the disease. Therefore, alternative therapeutic approaches are needed. Here, the efficacies of radiotherapy and targeting the pro-survival cell signaling components epidermal growth fact...
متن کاملInduction of cancer stem-like cells in A549 cells after exposure to carbon ions and X-rays
Background: Cancer stem-like cells (CSCs) play a crucial role in the initiation, progression, and recurrence of cancer. Evidence indicates that the high linear energy transfer (LET) carbon ion beam is more effective against CSCs than the conventional X-ray beam. Carbon ion radiotherapy is considered as a promising cancer strategy, however, information about whether, or not, new CSCs are induced...
متن کاملClonogenic cell survival assay.
The clonogenic cell survival assay determines the ability of a cell to proliferate indefinitely, thereby retaining its reproductive ability to form a large colony or a clone. This cell is then said to be clonogenic. A cell survival curve is therefore defined as a relationship between the dose of the agent used to produce an insult and the fraction of cells retaining their ability to reproduce. ...
متن کاملFrom DNA Radiation Damage to Cell Death: Theoretical Approaches
Some representative models of radiation-induced cell death, which is a crucial endpoint in radiobiology, were reviewed. The basic assumptions were identified, their consequences on predicted cell survival were analyzed, and the advantages and drawbacks of each approach were outlined. In addition to "historical" approaches such as the Target Theory, the Linear-Quadratic model, the Theory of Dual...
